Side Project

Ongoing

Back at TicketSwap, I became friends with Igor Lipovac. A great iOS developer among other things. At the same time I got really into writing songs. The experience of writing digitally however, is lacking. As a side project, we are building a native app that keeps the focus on creative writing.

From my experience, writing lyrics (digitally) can be a distracting process. Switching between tabs while having your notes open. When I search for rhymes and synonyms to explore different angles, there are ads and popups everywhere. I get annoyed, or distracted, and before I know I got stuck into a YouTube’s algorithm.

Interviewing friends

Initially I wanted to make this app just for myself, but I found out that fellow musicians and friends shared the same feeling - they all seemed interested in a dedicated tool for lyrics. We also found out that people use their macbook mainly for writing documents, but for notes, thoughts and drafts, the phone is used more. That’s when we started to think of lyrics as notes, because an idea for a song can easily pop up.

The Experience

We started this project quite a while a go, and the idea and UX framework has been developed over time, but the idea of building an addition on top of the native keyboard, is something that’s there from the beginning. We then outlined the most mentioned features, and start designing and developing in sync with one another.

UX Framework

Minimalist approach

The minimalist approach was there from the start, but it was quite challenging to make the step of advanced wireframes to visual design. When you have not that many assets to play with, you have to get the visual balance right by adjusting the space, type and color.

Rhyme supports light and dark mode - for the early birds and night owls.

Native development

The tool we are building is iOS native, because Igor understands their language really well, and I’m a iPhone user for many years. Because of the native development, we also have plans to roll out Rhyme on iPad and MacOS.

What about AI?

As mentioned before, this project is not new. Since the rapid development around AI, we thought about how (and if) we want to embrace this with Rhyme. Our shared opinion was that it could be interesting to integrate it, but only to assist the creation tool, and not distract you from your creative process.
